Wild Thing

Evie has never had a haircut. Yeah. She will be two next month and we have never cut her hair. When we moved here to Timor she was only 4 months old.

The only trip we have taken off the island to a place that had a salon was in Italy and at that point she didn't have enough hair to cut :)

I have been asked how I get her hair in braids, or piggy tails etc. and it is honestly because if I do not put her hair in some sort of "tie" she goes around looking like the shaggy dog (in a super cute little girl way)

With going on our big family vacation in two weeks I thought it was high time she get a hair cut (that, and her dad asking pretty much everyday when I will cut her hair and Che Che actually jumping and clapping when I mentioned it ha!).

Now the problem is, how in the world do you cut little girls hair? I don't mean myself by any means, we are taking her to the one Australian who cuts hair even though I must admit I will be paying more then I will EVER pay for a child's hair cut ughhh.

What I mean is she has such thin, uneven hair with a cow lick that comes all the way from the back of her head. Do any of you have any advice? Fun websites with cute suggestions on it?

I am so nervous about it I feel kinda silly. But as cute as she is:

This hair has got to be tamed! Because when you see this wild thing coming at you from behind the cozy coupe,

you get a little scared ha! Thanks for any suggestions, oh and Evie would thank you too, that is when she is done running me over with the coupe.

  1. Good luck with the hair cut. I have two girls 4.5 and 2.5. Neither have ever had there hair cut! I think I am to nervous that it will look like mine did when I was little. I know it's kind of weird having a total stranger comment on your blog but I would like to tell you Thank you! I have used many of your patterns (retro rainbow romper is my favorite. It has also become a halter top and a super cute dress!) I am a stay at home mom with a very limited budget and a little bit of hand me down scrap fabric. I really love your ideas and I love that you openly share them with the rest of us. Thank you again! Jeni

  2. I totally relate to this kelly. My little girl was born with lots of hair, and at 7mths now I am considering a tidy up hair cut. But it's freaking me out trying to think how to cut it when she gets older. Hope you get some suggestions that prove helpful.

  3. i have a little girly and she hasn't had a hair cut in a long time, nor does she want one as she wants to be a princess and they have long hair! Before that i always left it to the hairdresser to decide what to do with it as she has a double crown and a will of its own! i think your lass looks very cute! if it fine and that the longer you leave it the better as otherwise it has no weight and will fly off in all directions! hope it works out well!

  4. My nephew didn't get his first haircut till he was 3 (for religious reasons) and sometimes i really miss his long golden hair. http://peculiarlypink.deviantart.com/#/d2w05wz
Now i cut his hair, and while the back/sides are easy (electric razor) i still find it hard to manage the whispy front hair that still has that baby-hair texture. I'll be interested to see what you do with your daughters as i'm slated to give nephew a trim in a couple weeks.

  5. I usually just trim my daughter's fringe when it starts getting in her eyes. (She's sit still for a little bit, just go at it bit by bit and over a couple of days you'll have it done.) I cut about 3 inches off the whole bob earlier this year. I'd recommend doing it when they are interested in something else (reading a book or watching a cartoon.) If you take her to a hairdressers, I would imagine that she'd be fairly timid and would do what the hairdresser recommended.
My daughters have lovely curly auburn hair. If only I was so fortunate!

  6. I just did a bob with a fringe in my daughter's hair until it all evened out and stopped looking like a mullet! Cutting their hair is scary, but ultimately better for their hair as it does get thicker and less wispy!

  7. i have cut my daughters hair several times now. she is 2.5 and we go with some fringe and a simple bob to even out all the layers. this summer we are growing out the fringe since the rest has finally grown out to the same length.

i was nervous too- but it looked so much better after the cut each time, im so glad i did it. and thin baby hair looks thicker when its cut evenly, i had people asking if her hair had GROWN after i cut it. :)

  8. I just cut my daughters hair 2 wks ago on her 3rd birthday, it was time. We did a sweet little bob. I think next time we'll give it more style cutting it shorter in the back and a bit longer in the front. A friend suggested the little mini bangs, which I love...maybe just on other kiddos!

  9. aww, first cut, so sweet. Her hair reminds me of my older daughter's. Wild cowlicky bunch of hair! I found the only way to keep it somewhat decent was to cut her some bangs / a fringe (however you want to say it!) and cut it into a bob, but leave it long enough for at least half-pony piggies for nice occasions. Her hair was so fine it was just unruly and nuts otherwise. Now that she's nearly four its thick enough to actually weigh itself down if I grow it out, so I'm growing out her bangs for the first time! She's finally got it long enough that I can do pigtail braids behind her ears. It's always grown really fast, but really fine.

  10. As a stylist, with 2 little girls of my own, I would just suggest getting it cut even on the ends in the back. Let the sides and front be layered the way they naturally are. My 2 year old has finer hair, but when I keep it cut in a cute bob shape, it looks so much thicker. And I can still get it into pigtails. Some suggestions on some products for her hair, use a stick wax, not gel or a heavy pomade. (Tigi makes a great stick wax that will last forever!) It keeps those fine hairs in place without being heavy on the hair.
Oh, and take a few books for her to read while you get her hair cut. It makes such a big difference if she can occupy herself!
    Good luck!

  11. I just recently cut my 2.5 year old's hair. I didn't really want to, but she will NOT let me do anything with it and it was getting long. We live in FL, and summer is coming, so cutting it short was the only way to keep her cool. I cut it into a short bob, with the fronts and sides just a little longer. She too has crazy cowlicks in her hair, the bob looks so cute because even when it's crazy messy, it's super cute.

  12. I'm no help...my daughter is two and we haven't cut her hair either. I asked my husband about it the other day and he said he loves when she looks all wild and shaggy. And personally I kind of like the wild look too (especially since it matches my permanently unkempt hair...)

  13. agree with many above comments, but my advice- don't cut the bangs (fringe). a cute bob with the goal of all the front grown out the same length is definitely the way to go. They could even stack the back (like a wedge bob) which makes it look fuller and then you can style the whole thing with just a swoop of hair/ bangs to the side with one of your cute flowers or tiny rubber band and ribbon.

my daughter is 4 and finally has to have her fringe trimmed with the rest of her hair, I didn't chop it into a bob until she was 3 and when i look a photos I wish I would have done it sooner.

    you will love it!!!

  14. My daughter has the same exact hair as yours...the flip at the bottom, the shaggy thing going on, and even the same color. I used to be a hair dress so I have started trimming her bangs every now and then, just when they are starting to get in her eyes. Not the straight across look, just point cut and swoop them to the side. As far as cutting the back we haven't tried that yet...like you we do pigtails, ponytails, braids, headbands, hats..but I have found that a bit of detangler spray in the morning and a little tuck behind the ears helps. Good luck with the haircut, can't wait to see it.

  15. Another "hair lady" here.... and I have 4 girlies of my own {;0) I say even out the length and trim the "layers" she has, even with just a small bit off the layers it won't tangle as much and just be easier to care for. My 2 year old has hair like her's too, she hasn't gotten her "big kid" hair yet, but she is into everything all the time and won't sit still for me to mess with her hair. I gave her a shaggy pixie cut last fall and she loves it and I love it, no tangles to worry about and if she gets mud/food/sticky something in it it's not too much to plunk her in the tub. I trim her bangs by butting into them/point cutting so they're not blunt but shaggy and that way there's no hair in her eyes either. She's very busy and was forever looking down and having hair in her eyes, which is another reason for the short hairdo, if you cut all the hair that falls in their face then their "bangs" go all the way to the crown of their head and when they finally want to grow them it's really difficult to do without cutting it all short first. Sorry for the "book" there, lol, just thought I'd give my "2 cents" too {;0)

  16. oh, and yes bring books and/or suckers... something to keep her hands busy. Something special she doesn't get to have all the time like a treat or something is a fantastic idea.

  17. The "inverted bob" is a good one with that hair - Bianca was wispy like that when she was littler. There is kind of a wedge in the back, longer in the front and a little bit of bangs. I didn't bother growing out B's bangs until she was 5 - just too hard to keep it out of the eyes otherwise! The back wedge helps with the back-of-the-head tangle situation. Gaylene will do great :)

  18. I agree with many who suggested trimming up the back so it's a bit more even but leaving her face layers to fill in naturally. My daughter, 2 now, got some sneaky bangs with her first trim but they take so long to grow out that I regretted cutting them. My own stylist, with a toddler of her own, suggested trimming my little one's hair while she was in the bathtub. The hair is already damp, easy to comb out straight, and you can just rinse it down the drain afterwards. It worked out pretty well, even for an amateur.

  19. I really connect with your story. My girl was two and a half, minus one day, when she first had a hair cut. Part of it was her fine, thin straightish hair that had only JUSt arrived and parts FORWARD! egads!....what to do with it? the other, well, I wanted her hair to be something I could live with styling, not needing the incidious every other weekly bang trim etc. and I didnt want her to look like her older cousin..

We left it long in the front: in the back, some layers(which really added some of her mamma's curl) and the stylist said it should help with the tangles. I coax barettes in to her bangs to keep the hair out of her eyes and food, very occasionally, she permits a pig tail or braid. Your girl looks to be as energetic as mine...(she has lovely eyes) My suggestion, having just had my gals hair cut for the second time,....long layers aroung those pretty eyes, cliping hair back as needed while front of the hair grows long, and keeping the back softly rounded with some layers, the stylist aught to be able to layer it so that it falls in a soft merengue about her shoulders.

The worst hair cut in the world wouldnt change how beautiful she is!

  20. My girlie will be 2 in July and just got a wee trim (her hair is about the same as Evie's but different color - fly away and fine) I ended up cutting just a few wispy bangs to satisfy her - she was insisting on getting a "hair cut too" after Daddy and big bro got their buzz cuts this time. I want to know though how you keep any kind of tie in her hair? If mine doesn't pull hers out within minutes it works its out in an hour or so and i've tried several different types of bands and barrettes.

  21. I think I had my first haircut at 4, and have not had a real haircut (just trims) since then! If you want to avoid this scenario - Don't do what my grandmother did, and give her a boy's bowl cut. (How bad does that sound :()

She's adorable though, her hair isn't too long! At least it's not really thick so she'd look like a 70's teamster if you stuck a fake mustache on her (What I always wanted to do to my brother when he was younger)
