Rocket Man: Little Boys Space Party!

Tomorrow is Finn's space party {no one remind him his birthday was a month ago ha!} He kept going back & forth between a space party and a shark party. Then he told me he wanted a sharks in space party. Well, I am not THAT creative. Thankfully my friend brought me back a fabulous party edition of Donna Hay's magazine and it had fabulous ideas for a space party and when I showed it to him it completely won him over. The project I thought was down right genius was the home made jet packs and I just had to share them with you!
{Warning: once kiddos put these on there is NO keeping them still, blast off will take place immediately}

What you will need:
Two Large water bottles
Mirror Board (as if I could EVER find something like that here, so I just used refelctive wrapping paper)
Long strips of Yellow tissue paper
Medium strips of Red Tissue paper
Short strips of Orange tissue paper
Gaffer Tape
Elastic (not shown)
Scissors
Glue (sponge brush is helpful)

Take your mirror board or reflective paper and cut it so it is a little wider then your bottle and nice and long

Paint glue all around the bottle except for the slanted part leading up to the mouth of the bottle.

Roll the paper up around the bottle.

Paint the bottom edge with glue

Finish rolling up your bottle and make sure the flap is nice and secure

Cut a LONG strip of gaffer tape and lay it on the table sticky side up

Take your long strips of yellow crepe paper or tissue paper and stick strips one after the other onto the tape

Follow this by the red and then end with the orange. Start and stop the paper about an inch from each end so that the tape can connect with the bottle and seal itself on the end

Now you are going to wrap the gaffer tape around the mouth of the bottle by rolling it. (Make sure not to catch the tape on your reflective paper)

One down one more to go! Repeat the process on your second water bottle.

Once you have completed both we are going to stick them together. If you have double sided tape that would work great. I rolled up a piece of gaffer tape and stuck it in between the two jets.

I then reinforced it with some tape on top. I didn't want to be fixing jets all night at the party :)

Now for the final touch cut two longer lengths of thin elastic. Tape them securely to the bottle.

Now show your little spaceman and watch their eyes totally light up.

Finn actually shrieked and then immediately started running and saying "shhhhhhewwwww!"

When I begged him to hold still just for a second he gave me this sweet pouty face.

It really is just rude of me to ask someone with a jet pack to hold still! Sawyer loved his as well but wasn't quiet as grumpy when I asked him to stop

  1. that's an AWESOME craft to do for boys! I mean, girls would love it too, I know mine would, but there's just not as many things to make for boys that make them shriek in delight.

  22. I am a mom and school teacher in a resource classroom. My mom sent me this link and I am supper excited to use this idea to teach how to follow directions. (I have a student who has trouble touching his nose then touching his toes...)I also will be teacher how to count to 30, groups of 10, and getting past that darn #13! (10 red, 10 yellow, 10 orange)And one last lesson on counting backwards, 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 BLASTOFF!! Thanks so much for posting the photos of each task. The kids can view them on the big screen of our promethean board. This is going to be a great lesson. I can't wait!

  23. I have a Finn, too! Who also loves all things that go, especially spaceships. Funny that your other boy is Sawyer, if we had had another boy, that was our top choice.
